Academic Summary

Dr. Kedia received his PhD with a concentration in Applied and Medical Anthropology from the University of Kentucky in 1997. The same year, he completed a certificate in Medical Behavioral Science from the College of Medicine at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Kedia’s research interests include the health impacts of forced displacement, alcohol and drug abuse, caregiving and adherence behavior, HIV/AIDS, health effects of pesticide use, program evaluation, and social aging. He has conducted research in India, the Philippines, and the United States.

In India, he has conducted fieldwork among Polyandrous Khasa and Garhwali peasants in the Himalayas and Tadavi peasants in the west coast. In collaboration with social scientists at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Dr. Kedia has conducted fieldwork among Filipino farmers to study the health impacts of pesticide use and Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Over the last ten years, he has developed applied health projects in the Mid-South, focusing on alcohol and drug abuse treatment, caregiving and adherence issues associated with HIV/AIDS and children with developmental diseases.

Currently, as director of the Institute for Substance Abuse Research &  Evaluation (I-SARE), he oversees several state research projects: Tennessee Outcomes for Alcohol and Drug Services (TOADS), Alcohol and Drug Addiction Treatment – Driving Under the Influence (ADAT-DUI), Gambling Addiction Treatment Evaluation (GATE) in Tennessee, and Tennessee Alcohol and Drug Prevention Outcome Longitudinal Evaluation (TADPOLE).

Dr. Kedia’s volume, Applied Anthropology: Domains of Application, co-edited with John van Willigen, was released in October 2005 by Praeger Publishers. The volume incorporates discussions of nine important domains by well-known scholars in the field as well as chapters on the history and future of applied anthropology. Dr. Kedia is also the Co- General Editor of the NAPA Bulletin.
